We don't get much snow here in Arizona (I'm midway between Phoenix and Flagstaff). But I remember how much ice-melt I used when back in Pennsylvania years ago. We did not take care of abandoned cats then.
I found the following information on the internet. You might find it valuable. Snow melt can be harmful for cats and dogs. The article I quote below mentions a brand harmless for pets. But I'm not promoting that product. Just remember to read labels for ice melt which is harmless to pets and children.
